Grigsby joined Brigham Young University in 1986 after completing his high school education. In 1989, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism. He then furthered his studies at Western Kentucky University, where he received his Meteorology Degree.
While in high school, he was an all-state basketball player, scoring over 2,000 points. As a result, he won offers to play college basketball at Auburn, BYU, Ohio University, and other colleges. However, he decided to leave the sports world in favor of concentrating on his studies in broadcast journalism and meteorology.
