Rod Carter Education
Carter joined Florida A&M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee in August 1986 after completing his studies at Amos P Godby High School. In December 1990, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcast Journalism.
Carter furthered his studies at the University of Alabama in August 2021, receiving his Master of Arts degree in Journalism & Media Studies. In January 2026, he joined the University of Tennessee, where he is pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Adult and Continuing Education.

Carter is working for CBS 17, serving as a weeknight evening anchor. In this role, he anchors the evening newscasts at 4, 6, 7, and 11 p.m. He serves as an adjunct professor, teaching a reporting and writing course at FAMU. He has spent many years on the FAMU School of Journalism Board of Visitors.
Carter serves as a Life Member of the FAMU National Alumni Association and has long supported his alma mater. He developed a Broadcast Journalism Boot Camp, exclusively taught by FAMU journalism alumni.
Carter has spearheaded the NABJ–FAMU Journalism Short Course, mentoring aspiring journalists during an intensive training program. He previously worked as an adjunct professor of communications at St. Augustine’s University in Raleigh.
Carter received the Kappa Tau Alpha Hall of Fame Award from the University of South Florida’s Zimmerman School of Advertising and Mass Communications. Before working for CBS17, he spent almost 20 years at WFLA in Tampa, Florida.

Carter is deeply devoted to community service. In this capacity, he serves as a mentor to several journalists and student journalists. He is also a member of the Wendell/Wake County Branch NAACP.
Carter also sits on many boards and committees, including the Florida A&M University School of Journalism Board of Visitors, the Community Leadership Board of the American Diabetes Association NC, and the Hillsborough Community College Digital, TV & Media Production Advisory Board.
Carter cahirs the board of the Gentleman’s Quest Mentoring Program and is a judge for DPAC Rising Stars. Previously, he sat on the boards of the Tampa Bay Juneteenth Coalition, The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, and Swope, Rodante Vanguard Award Selection Board.
Carter has extensively served the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). Recently, he chaired NABJ’s 50th Anniversary Committee in December 2025. He also finished a term as Secretary on the NABJ Executive Board in August 2025.
Carter worked as a Region III Director and former Region III Deputy Director for NABJ. He is a former President of the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists and a former Vice President–Broadcast of the Birmingham Association of Black Journalists. Moreover, he was the Vice President–Digital for the Raleigh-Durham Chapter.
Carter serves as a Life Member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He also serves as the fraternity’s International Director of Publicity. He is a member of the Eta Sigma Chapter in Raleigh and a charter member and former 2nd Vice President of the Sigma Xi Sigma Chapter in Tampa.
