McCray is a 1999 graduate of the Ohio State University in Columbus, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Meteorology. In regard to his profession, McCray serves at WHBF Local 4 News in the Quad Cities as a Chief Meteorologist. McCray says that he takes pride in leading the WHBF-TV effort to be among the first TV stations in the nation recognized by the National Weather Service as StormReady. In the year 2012, the station became among the first 10 TV stations in the country to get this recognition!
Before joining WHBF, McCray worked at TV stations in Rockford, Illinois, and Rhinelander, Wisconsin. He began playing weather trivia on Local 4 News at 5 and 6. While in college, he had internships at 2 television stations. However, long before college, he had already made a decision that he aspired to become a meteorologist! At the age of 8, he was a big fan of the Weather Channel. His family won a holiday decorating competition in Dayton, Ohio, and part of the prize was having the local TV station broadcast the weather “live” from their front yard at McCray’s! That’s when McCray knew for sure that he wanted to pursue meteorology.
In the year 2004, McCray received the National Weather Association Seal of Approval. Every 3 years, he has to renew his seal by keeping up with his meteorology education. He attends seminars all across the country for this. One of his best memories of Quad Cities weather is the Blizzard in February and January of the year 2011. McCray says that he loves discussing the weather and is happy to talk about upcoming thunderstorms or snowfall. He has even taught Intro to Meteorology at Black Hawk College in Moline for half a decade.
