Angela Chen Education
Chen joined UC San Diego when she finished her high school education. She later graduated with a Bachelor Of Arts degree in World Literature, Writing, and Psychology. There, she worked as a teaching assistant at the Department of Literature. She then joined Columbia University’s Journalism School in New York City where she obtained her Master Of Science degree in Journalism.

Previously, Chen worked in Houston as a reporter and fill-in anchor at KRIV FOX 26. In Houston, Chen broadcasted the 2016 elections, hurricanes, and two Super Bowls. She also provided network live shots of terrorists and unrivaled floodwater devastation. Moreover, she was a host of a weekly food segment and FOX 26’s “The Asian Connection” which highlighted Asian American newsmakers and the diversity in Houston. Also, she reported for KTRK in Houston.
Chen secured her first employment at KUSI’s morning show in San Diego where she was a news writer. She then obtained her Master’s before working for NY1 News as a reporter. In Southern California, Chen worked as a reporter at news stations in Bakersfield and San Diego before relocating to Reno where she served KOLO. Aside from TV news, she has worked as a reporter for multiple print and digital outlets like The New York Times, The Huffington Post, and Bustle.
The Southern California native is a proud member of AAJA and an alumna of Pi Beta Phi. As a child, she wore red glasses and was always reading a book. Her love for literature eventually led her to journalism and shaped her life.

During her career, Chen has won awards for her journalism work including an Emmy, the Lone Star Award, and the Philip S. Weintraub Media Award. Also, she has received several journalism fellowships including a Society of Environmental Journalists grant fund, the RIAS German Fellowship, and the N.S. Bienstock Fellowship.
Chen was chosen as the major grant winner of the USC Center for Health Journalism Impact Fund. She won both grants for a multi-part series on the Salton Sea. The series also earned her another Emmy, an Edward R. Murrow, and a Golden Mike Award in 2022. That same year, the Society of Environmental Journalists awarded her the Outstanding Explanatory Reporting award. She was also named a Maynard 200 Fellowship recipient.
In 2024, Chen won an Emmy award and an Edward R. Murrow award for her reports on the Colorado River. Additionally, she won another Emmy for her medical reporting on caregiver burnout.
