Additionally, Norman often represents WMAQ by attending various community events as an ambassador. He began as a general assignment reporter and host of “Art Norman’s Chicago” at the station. He retired from WMAQ in the year 2009 but came back part-time as a special contributor in the year 2012.
Over the years with WMAQ, Norman has provided extensive news coverage. In February 1990, Norman took the lead in initiating an exclusive investigation for NBC Chicago. The investigation focused on the Cook County Sheriff’s Department, looking into allegations of civil rights violations related to a controversial drug raid at a suburban tavern.
Norman started working in broadcasting back in the year 1969 when he got a job as a television engineer at WCCB-TV in Charlotte, N.C. In the ’70s, he worked as a reporter at WSOC-TV and WPCQ-TV, both in Charlotte, North Carolina. In the year 1976, he was part of the team that won the George Foster Peabody Award for NBC’s “Weekend Magazine.” Norman then became a reporter and weekend anchor at WMAR-TV in Baltimore, Maryland, in the year 1979. After that, he joined WMAQ.
Other than being a journalist, Norman is also deeply involved in the community. Besides hosting many community events annually, he acts as a spokesperson for the United Negro College Fund. He is also an on-air host for the United Negro College Fund’s telethon.

Art Norman Cancer / Health
Norman shared in March 2019 on his Facebook Page that he was diagnosed with bone cancer and was preparing to start chemotherapy. In the announcement, he mentioned, “My wife and I are ready for the difficult road ahead.” Since then, Norman has never talked about his health in the limelight, but it seems like he underwent cancer treatments and recovered, and he is now in good health.
