Barrett Phillips Education
Phillips joined the University of Oklahoma (Boomer Sooner) after completing his high school education. He later graduated with a Bachelor’s degree.
During his time in college, he held two internships at KOKH Fox 25 in Oklahoma City in the spring and summer of 2013. At the time of his internships, the 2013 spring tornado outbreaks (Moore and El Reno tornadoes) happened. He worked behind the scenes in the Fox 25 weather center with then-Chief Meteorologist Jeff George and meteorologist Jon Slater.

Phillips is working for KSWO, serving as the chief meteorologist. He was promoted to that role in April 2025 after working as an evening meteorologist. He launched his career at KOTA-Territory News in Rapid City, South Dakota, where he was a weekend meteorologist and weekday reporter.
During his time in South Dakota, Phillips forecast storm systems for the Black Hills area on weekends and sent weather reports from the field on weekdays. Temperatures reached as low as 20 below zero, and he experienced snow from September to May (2014)!
After spending six months at KOTA, Phillips worked as the chief meteorologist at KIDY (now Fox West Texas) in San Angelo, Texas. While in San Angelo, he experienced temperatures that rose to 110+ degrees for two consecutive weeks.
Phillips covered dust storms, flash flooding, strong blue northers, heat waves, and tornadoes in Texas. One December day, temperatures reached 84 degrees before falling into the 30s and snowing three inches by the next day. He also met and worked with Dr. Steve Lyons, a former hurricane expert at The Weather Channel, at the National Weather Service in San Angelo.
After spending 4 years in Texas, Phillips worked at KALB in Alexandria, Louisiana. There, he got to forecast in a tropical weather market and forecast Hurricane Laura, a Category 4 hurricane. He became proficient in tropical forecasting during his five-year span in the Bayou State. Before leaving the region, he obtained the NWA Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association.
