Bill Murray ( born William James Murray) is an American actor, comedian, and writer who is best known for being cast on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, where he received his first Emmy Award for a series of performances. He is also known for playing roles in Meatballs (1979), Caddyshack (1980), Stripes (1981), Tootsie (1982), Ghostbusters (1984), Ghostbusters II (1989), What About Bob? (1991), Groundhog Day (1993), among others.

Murray and Jennifer Butler separated in 1996, following Murray’s affair with Jennifer Butler. He married Butler in 1997. Caleb, Jackson, Cooper, and Lincoln are their four boys together. On May 12, 2008, Butler filed for divorce. On June 13, 2008, their divorce was completed. Butler died on the 19th of January, 2021.

In Chicago, he joined his brother in the cast of the improv comedy ‘The Second City,’ where he studied under Del Close. This gave him a purpose in life, and he began performing. In 1975, he was cast in Saturday Night Live, a short-lived ABC variety show. After two years, NBC invited him to perform on Saturday Night Live. He was a part of it for three years. In 1979, he made his film debut in the box office smash ‘Meatballs.’ The film ‘Where the Buffalo’s Roam’ followed, in which he played Hunter S. Thompson. The film, however, was a flop. With the cult hit ‘Caddyshack,’ he resurrected his career as an actor in 1980. In the years that followed, he appeared in box-office smashes such as ‘Stripes,’ ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay,’ and ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay.

He co-wrote and starred in ‘The Razor’s Edge’ in 1984. The film went poorly, and he was so unhappy that he took a four-year hiatus, only appearing in cameo appearances. Except for a cameo role in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ in 1986, he took a break from acting to spend time with his family and study philosophy and history at the Sorbonne. With ‘Scrooged,’ he returned to the big screen in 1988. The sequel, ‘Ghostbusters II,’ was released the following year. He even collaborated with Howard Franklin on the film ‘Quick Change.’In 1999, he published ‘Cinderella Story: My Life in Golf,’ a semi-autobiographical book on his love for the game.

He worked on Wes Anderson’s ‘The Aquatic Life’ in 2004. In addition, he appeared in Jim Jarmusch’s film ‘Broken Flowers.’ He made cameo appearances in ‘The Darjeeling Limited’ and ‘Get Smart’ the following year. After taking a sabbatical from acting, he made a memorable appearance in the 2008 film ‘City of Ember.’ He had a cameo appearance in the comedy ‘Zombieland’ the following year. He portrayed President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the film ‘Hyde Park on Hudson’ in 2012. In addition, he appeared in Wes Anderson’s film ‘Moonrise Kingdom.’ He will appear in Wes Anderson’s next film, ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel,’ opposite Johnny Depp and Jude Law, and is slated to be released in 2014.
