Bryan Busby Education

Busby has has helped put KMBC on the “weather map” by coming up with innovative programs like Guaranteed Weather, EarthStation, Weather-To-Go, Bryan Goes to School, and Instant Weather Network. He won the U.S. Patent No. 5,943,630 for Instant Weather Network.
Busby has become a favorite TV personality in Kansas City for his interaction, fun, and community outreach. He loves his job as it was a childhood dream to do TV weather since he was in 3rd grade. He developed an interest in the weather when he was a child in Cleveland, and decided TV was for him after studying the weather. As a high schooler, he used to do weather reports for two Cleveland-based radio stations.
Busby launched his TV career at the age of 17. In 1978, he started working for KTVI Channel 2 in St. Louis as an intern. There, he climbed his way up to weekend weathercaster after serving the station for eight weeks. He worked in St. Louis for 8 years before moving to Kansas City to join KMBC.
Performing
Busby is a natural showman with wit and personality who not only does weather but also works as the principal timpanist for the Kansas City Civic Orchestra. In this role, he annually performs with them five or six times. He also worked as the principal timpanist with the Kinnor Philharmonic and the Saint Joseph Symphony.
Busby previously worked as the solo timpanist for the Independence Messiah Festival Orchestra. In this role, he played in the group’s yearly performance of the Messiah at the Community of Christ Auditorium from 1992 until the orchestra’s final year in 2005. He has also performed with the Kansas City Symphony, the Kansas City Percussion Quartet, and the Moody Blues at Sandstone Amphitheater.
Besides performing, Busby was a featured Guest Conductor of the Kansas City Youth Symphony. In this role, he conducted the group in Yardley Hall at Midwest Trust Center, Kemper Arena, the United States Pavilion at the 1992 World’s Fair in Seville, Spain. He recently conducted the group at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Aside from his work with Youth Symphony, Busby was a guest conductor at community orchestras, regional symphonies, bands, and high schools. Moreover, he can imitate cartoon voices. He provided the voice-over for his cartoon character, Georgie Global, which has appeared on the Web, TV, and in newspapers countrywide.
Busby done voice-overs for his yearly radio Santa tracking (all except Santa of course) for years. He plans to pursue a career as a voice-over artist after he retires from broadcasting.
Community Work and Awards
The National Chapter of the American Meteorological Society appointed Busby to its Board of Broadcast Meteorologists. He worked as the chairman of the committee from 1997 to 1998. That same year, he was chosen to be a weathercaster at “Good Morning America.” He and 9 others were chosen to appear on the Weather Channel’s “America’s Forecasters” series. In 2021, Busby joined the Board of Directors of the National Weather Association
During his career, Busby has received many awards and recognitions, including Emmy nominations in 1985, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2006, and 2007.
