Simultaneously, he launched Ozarks Sports Zone, which gave the station a fresh perspective on high school sports. Since then, he has received 4 Emmy Best Sports Anchor in the Midwest Awards.
During his career, Plein has broadcast Missouri State in the NCAA Tournaments for women’s basketball and baseball, many Cardinals and Royals World Series games, the Chiefs in Miami for Super Bowl 54, and Drury’s 2013 National Championship run. He broke the national story of Bobby Petrino accepting the Missouri State University football job in January 2020.
Plein’s first real media experience was during his internship at ABC News Nightline. In September 1998, he was put right in the middle of a heated home run race between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa.
Plein worked as a sports producer for KSDK (NBC) in St. Louis for nearly 3 years. He then landed his first on-air position in 2002 at KQTV (ABC) in St. Joseph, where he was the sports director. When his contract expired in 2004, he relocated to Joplin as the sports director for KOAM (CBS). Following three years in Joplin, he transitioned to the news with a weekend anchoring position at KY3.
Since suffering a heart attack, Plein has helped out the American Heart Association through speaking engagements and fundraisers. He loves giving back to the community and won the 2012 Leukemia and Lymphoma Man of the Year Award for his fundraising endeavors.
