Before joining KNTV, Trujillo served at KSTS TELEMUNDO 48 in San Jose, California for 2 years(1994-1996); most recently as a news reporter and his first role was Assignment Editor).
Over the years of his career, he has won many awards and honors for his remarkable work as a journalist. He holds awards from RTNDA – the Radio and Television News Director’s Association, the Associated Press, and NAHJ – the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. The Associated Press Television and Radio Association for Nevada and California has named Trujillo “2004 Reporter of the Year”. He has also been a 5-time nominee for an Emmy.
In the year 2012, Carolyn Brown, who works at American University in Washington D.C. as a professor, made a 30-minute movie about Trujillo’s life called “From the Fields: An American Journey.” Trujillo showed this film at Harvard University, Stanford University, and Georgetown University, as well as at The National Steinbeck Center. Then, in April 2013, Congress asked Trujillo to come for a special showing on Capitol Hill.
Other than working as a journalist, Trujillo is also a former farm worker – his very 1st job was working on a farm. He used to work in Salinas Valley’s agricultural fields when in high school, picking strawberries, broccoli, cucumbers, and garlic. Trujillo says that his 1st day at work was on Cesar Chavez Holiday (on March 31), and he hosts students and his loved ones (friends and family) at his home every year on that holiday.
He usually makes sacked lunches and gives them to almost 250 farm workers in the South Bay, Los Angeles, California. Trujillo says that he does that as a form of thanking farm workers because he really understands what tireless work they do for yields. Trujillo also sponsors a college scholarship to one kid of a farm worker in Greenfield, CA, annually.
