Dan Thomas Career
Thomas is working for WSMV, serving as a meteorologist. He has been a weather fanatic for as long as he can remember. He used to stare out the window to watch New England’s powerful ocean storms while he was still a child. Thomas still has his cassette recording from when he was 6 years old, where he said, “It’s rainy, snowy, windy … That’s all the news for now. This is Danny Thomas.”
After graduating from college, Thomas started his military career at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta. In this capacity, he was deployed to the Middle East, where he informed pilots on weather conditions for their training missions over Iraq’s no-fly zone. He finished his active duty military service in the fall of 2000 as a captain, leading a 15-person firm in weather operations at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Oklahoma.
Following his time in the military, Thomas launched his full-time TV career as a morning meteorologist for KHBS/KHOG-TV in Fort Smith/Fayetteville. He spent his two years there chasing and tracking severe thunderstorms across western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma.
Thomas moved to New Orleans in early 2003, where he served WDSU, the NBC affiliate, as a broadcast meteorologist. During his time there, he broadcast over half a dozen hurricanes and tropical storms that hit the southeastern United States. He won a “First Place for Breaking Weather” from the Louisiana Associated Press for his broadcast of Hurricane Frances in 2004.
Notably, Thomas warned viewers of the looming ruin during the final hours of preparation and the first hours of impact during Hurricane Katrina. He recalls his room on the 11th floor of the Hilton Hotel in New Orleans creaking eight hours before landfall. Two hours after landfall, the hotel beds started shaking due to the increasing wind. At that point, he evacuated to the hotel lobby for safety alongside several coworkers. They evacuated to a sister station in Orlando the following day as flood waters rose and crime surged
Thomas obtained his Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Seal of Approval from the American Meteorological Society in May 2009. He is thrilled to call Nashville home with its stunning terrain, ever-changing weather, and very kind people.
