He is an assistant professor of broadcast journalism at Columbia University Journalism School.

Alarcón began his journalism career as an Associate Editor for the award-winning Peruvian magazine Etiqueta Negra, where he covered American culture and politics. In 2006, he began writing for publications such as Harper’s, The New York Times Magazine, and The New Yorker, and in 2008, he produced his first radio documentary, on Andean migration to Lima, for the BBC. Since then, he’s written for print and online publications in the United States and Latin America about book piracy, prison politics, world soccer, and immigration.

Alarcón teaches radio and writing at Columbia University School of Journalism in addition to serving as Executive Producer for Radio Ambulante.
