Rexroth lost sight in his left eye in a fireworks accident on the Fourth of July in 2014. At the time, he was on vacation with his family in Iowa when a box of repeater mortars misfired when he went to check on it. The firework exploded in his face, leading to lacerations and irreparable damage to his left eye. He underwent surgery and now wears a prosthetic eye.
