He mainly covers stories in Northern Iowa and Southern Minnesota. Cheney began as a production assistant at KEYC-TV and then transitioned to news reporter, then to weekend anchor, and again to midday news anchor, and finally to evening anchor.
Cheney started working at KEYC 2 weeks after a big tornado outbreak on March 29th, 1998. In his first year there, he worked behind the scenes, operating cameras, and audio during news shows. Then, he became a reporter and even served as an anchor for the weekend midday news. In the year 2003, he became the primary news anchor.
Cheney’s job at KEYC has brought him to many places in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota. He’s also traveled to Kosovo and Jamaica for work. However, he says one of the best parts of his job is being at the station. He values working with people like Bob Conzemius, Curt Crandall, Perry Dyke, and many others he’s met over the years. Cheney also says that his favorite part of his job was meeting Perry Dyke. He also says that taking TV classes in junior college gave him the confidence to pursue a career in news, sparking his interest in the field.
