After graduating from college in 1985, Lezak got his big break in 1986 when he joined KWTV-TV in Oklahoma City as a morning meteorologist. In 1992, he moved to Kansas City and has been in the region for over 25 years. KSHB 41 elected him as the chief meteorologist in 1999. Ever since, he established himself and the weather team as the most precise in Kansas City, ranking No. 1 in forecasting not only during his time at KSHB but since he arrived here in 1992.

Lezak has been on the air during some of the biggest weather events in Kansas City history, including the May 4, 2003, tornado and the May 28, 2019, tornado. In 2021, he marked the 10th anniversary of the fatal Joplin tornado by traveling to the city to share stories about the lessons learned that will keep people safer across the Midwest.

Lezak is also an animal lover who shares his airtime with his well-known dogs. In 2000, Windy the Weather Dog was on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” On Fridays, he added Breezy, Stormy, and Sunny to his long tradition of having dogs share some time on the news set.

Lezak noticed weather patterns cycle in the 1980s, deducing that accurate weather forecasts could be made using this new technology. In 2018, a peer-reviewed paper was published, making him an author of a scientific discovery. Moreover, he has authored a children’s story called β€œIt’s A Sunny Life.”

By far, the biggest challenge in Lezak’s life was in 1999 when he was diagnosed with a very rare form called extra-skeletal osteogenic sarcoma.

After the doctors found out the cancer was aggressive, they recommended extensive chemotherapy treatment to ensure the cancer was removed from his body. He underwent two surgeries before undergoing his chemotherapy treatments.

Since 2000, Lezak has been cancer-free and celebrates every day. He shares his experience with cancer and passion for weather during public appearances with Sunny the Weather Dog.
