Gerald Owens Career

Owens serves at WRAL as a news anchor/reporter. There was a new course of research and a new career on the horizon. It was on this route that he arrived at WRAL. It was a task that I set for myself. He was a sports reporter at home on his day off on September 11, 2001, when the first plane struck the World Trade Center in New York. He went to work because he couldn’t stay still after the second tower was struck and then the Pentagon, which was just a few miles away from his home. In every way he could, he had to be a part of it. It was the 7th of December, 1941, all over again in his own backyard.

During Operation Desert Shield in 1990, he interned at ABC News’ “Nightline,” where he developed his new theory. There’s nothing like being on the front lines of a major news organization during one of the century’s most important stories. In 1993, he began his career in television as a reporter trainee at WUSA-TV in Washington, D.C. It was day-to-day reporting work that required a lot of hands-on experience.

Honesty is everything to him. Someone once said, “Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is looking,” but he can’t remember who it was. At work and at home, he seeks to live by this principle. If you can’t look at yourself in the mirror after you’ve finished your work, you’re not doing it right. He aspired to be the CEO of a big corporation. Reality set in, and after graduating from college, he went to work for a small plastics company in Maryland. He spent 13 years there, rising through the ranks to become the general manager. He’d reached a crossroads in his life and wanted to make a change.
