In the series, she portrays the role of Anika Calhoun and she stars for only 4 seasons (1-4). As the series began, Byers (Anika) worked as a leader at Empire Entertainment’s music department. Then, she was going to marry Lucious, but they later decided not to.

After leaving Empire, she has a relationship with Hakeem and gets pregnant. She’s scared about Rhonda being pregnant too, because Rhonda’s baby claims to be the next boss of Empire. Anika pushes Rhonda down some stairs, and Rhonda’s baby doesn’t make it. Cookie and Anika don’t like each other at all, and Cookie calls her “Boo Boo Kitty”. He finds out he will die soon because of ALS, a disease. He has to pick one of his kids to take over his business when he’s gone. Lucious starts training his sons for this – his son Andre, who’s in charge of money (played by Trai Byers), his son Jamal, who sings R&B (played by Jussie Smollett), and his son Hakeem, who’s a rapper (played by Bryshere Y. Gray). While doing this, Lucious makes them compete against each other. Lucious’ ex-wife Cookie Lyon (played by Taraji P. Henson) gets out of jail after being there for 17 years. She also wants control of the company and her sons.
