Skinner is a proud alumnus of the University of South Alabama, where he pursued a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Meteorology with minors in Music and Mathematics. Skinner serves at WKRG News 5 as a weekday Digital Reporter and Weekend Evening Meteorologist. Prior to his full-time position at WKRG, Skinner was a Summer Intern at the same organization during the summer of 2021 for 3 months. Before joining WKRG, he was still a student in college. During college, Skinner learned from his professor, John Nodar, who is a meteorologist on the News 5 First Alert Storm Team in the mornings. This experience made Skinner really enjoy broadcasting and helped him improve his skills. Now, he’s excited to work with John, his mentor and teacher.
Also during his college years, Skinner did research in the United States with Dr. Sytske Kimball. They studied how temperature changes near the ground affect farms along the Gulf Coast. Skinner talked about his research at a college event and at a big weather conference in January 2022. He also worked with the Coastal Weather Research Center at his college to help businesses like Alabama Power be ready for bad weather. During his stint at the University of South Alabama, Skinner was a part of the USA Jaguar Marching Band. He was the leader of the band in his 3rd and 4th years. Plus, his fellow students chose him as the Homecoming King in the year 2021.
Besides being a meteorologist, Skinner has also dedicated his time to education and community involvement. He served as a Tutor at the Boys & Girls Club in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, during the summer of 2020. He continued his tutoring work as a part-time employee at Chegg Inc. from April 2020 to August 2020.
Skinner’s commitment to education and community extends to his time as a Campus Maintenance Assistant at Christ the King School in Nashville, Tennessee. He held this full-time position during the summers of 2018 and 2019. Additionally, Skinner’s early work experience includes a notable 4-year and 1-month stint as an Insider at Jets Pizza in Smyrna, Tennessee, from August 2014 to August 2018. During his spare time, he likes to watch any college sporting events or TV shows, hang out with his family and friends, or play his guitar.
