Storm was seriously burned on December 11, 2012, while preparing dinner for her children. The flame on her propane grill was blown out by the wind, causing propane gas to accumulate. When she attempted to relight it, an explosive fireball erupted. She closed her eyes upon seeing the flame, which saved her vision, but she sustained first- and second-degree burns to her face, neck, chest, and hands.
In the accident, Hannah lost her eyebrows, eyelashes, and about half of her hair. Her daughter called 911, and Hannah received medical care at the Burn Center at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York. She returned to the air on January 1, 2013, co-hosting the Rose Parade on ABC with her left hand still bandaged.
