For two years, he served as an assistant coach at the College of William & Mary. He also worked as an assistant coach at Duke University and with the Milwaukee Bucks. In 1974, he received his first professional head coaching opportunity with the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association, where he remained until 1976. From 1976 to 1981, Hubie was the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks. He later coached the New York Knicks from 1982 until he was fired in 1986. He concluded his coaching career as the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies.
