Additionally, he took on the role of interim head coach after the dismissal of head coach Wade Phillips on November 8, 2010.
During his interim tenure, the team secured a victory in their first game, defeating the favored New York Giants with a score of 33–20 at New Meadowlands Stadium. In 2014, Garrett attained his first head-coaching success.
