During her student years at San Diego State University, Zelasko began her broadcasting career by doing metro traffic reports and later hosting a chat show on KCEO radio. In 1993, she began her television career as a weekend anchor at KDCI-TV News in San Diego. Zelasko co-hosted the San Diego Padres pre-game programme for Prime Sports West, a Southern California regional sports network, early in her career (now Fox Sports Net West). She covered a number of sports for the network as an assignment reporter, including the NFL, NHL, collegiate basketball, and auto racing.
