Jeff Lawson Career
Lawson serves at 13News Now – WVEC as a Chief Meteorologist. He started his career at AccuWeather in State College, Pennsylvania, where he worked full-time from 1980 to 1982. Following that, he spent a year as a meteorologist at WeatherCenter Inc. in Ithaca, New York, in 1982-1983. Jeff then moved on to WWBT/NBC12 Raycom Media in Richmond, Virginia, where he worked full-time for four years from 1983 to 1987. His meteorology career continued at WTTG Fox 5 in Washington, D.C., where he worked full-time for three years from 1987 to 1990. After that, he joined WVEC.
As a child, Lawson had a curious nature and he used to collect hailstones and examine them to understand their journey within thunderstorms. During his time at the Campus Weather Service, he faced a significant challenge when emergency planners dealing with the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant incident sought his guidance on which areas needed evacuation due to radiation fallout.
During Christmas breaks and summers while in college, he used to serve at NOAA, an umbrella organization of NWS – the National Weather Service. At NOAA, he collaborated with Dr. Vern Dvorak to create techniques for assessing the power of tropical storms using satellite images. These methods are still widely employed by the National Hurricane Center to gauge the intensity of distant tropical systems, especially when they can’t be reached by hurricane hunter aircraft or are between reconnaissance flights.
After finishing college, Lawson began working at private firms where he provided weather forecasts for school systems, radio stations, and ski resorts. He also assisted TV weather presenters who didn’t have meteorological backgrounds by giving them guidance on what to say during their television broadcasts for the evening.
When his time working in radio (including as a consultant for 2WD) and his TV career are merged, Lawson has been providing weather forecasts for Hampton Roads for 43 years. This is longer than any other meteorologist in the area’s history. He’s also proud to have been voted as the all-time Dream Team of Hampton Roads anchors and Hampton Roads’ favorite meteorologist. During his leisure time, he likes to cycle and go on hikes.

Jeff Lawson Cancer / Illness
On October 5, 2022, Lawson took a hiatus from his newscasts at WVEC to handle a health issue. He announced that he was diagnosed with erythroplakia/leukoplakia, which causes unusual red or thick, white patches in the mouth. In Lawson’s case, it affected his tongue. He had to undergo surgery to remove roughly 20% of his tongue’s surface, roughly the size of his thumb.
This was not the first time he faced this issue; five years earlier, he had surgery to remove 10% of his tongue for the same reason. After the recent surgery, Lawson had concerns about how it might affect his speech and ability to deliver weather forecasts. His surgery was scheduled for October 10, 2022, and it went well, he has since recovered, now in good health.
