He covers the Trump administration with a focus on President Trump’s pivotal role in the 2018 midterm election campaign for all of the network’s programs and platform, the overall 2020 campaign, and the network’s senior White House correspondent in his role as the senior Washington correspondent. He joined CNN’s team in 2015.

Before he joined CNN he served as a senior Washington correspondent at ABC News. He extensively reported on the Republican Party as it gained control of the United States Senate in the 2014 midterm elections, and on the Obama administration. He also worked at The New York Times where he was the national political correspondent. Additionally, he covered Obama’s 2008 campaign to the White House and the 2012 presidential election.

Furthermore, he also previously covered Congress for the Times and the first two years of the Obama administration as a White House correspondent. He served as the national political correspondent for the Chicago Tribune before the New York Times. In his role, he covered the first term of the Bush administration and the 2004 presidential campaign.

While in Chicago, he joined the Tribune as a reporter on the Metropolitan desk in 2000. During this time he was a member of the reporting team that won a Pulitzer Prize in explanatory journalism for documenting gridlock in the nation’s air traffic system. Zeleny’s journalism career began at the Des Moines Register after he graduated from college.
