Finley’s investigations have prompted new state laws, several criminal charges and prison sentences, TBI and district attorney investigations, the dismissal of one of the highest paid chosen officials in Nashville, a $1 million payout to the victims of a countrywide company scamming the sick and uninsured, and the discovery of lost girls.
Finley was the first to shed light on the “unintended acceleration” in Toyota vehicles, leading to one of the biggest automobile recalls in the nation’s history and Congressional hearings in which his investigations were included. The Nashville Post dubbed him a watchdog for exposing corrupt politicians due to his investigations into elected officials.
Finley exposed an elected official who lounged in his bathrobe while claiming to be in a meeting. His work has repeatedly exposed scam artists and thieves in action, leading to guilty pleas. He and a WSMV4 photojournalist notably discovered runaway girls hiding in the home of a man accused of squatting in a foreclosed home.
His favorite assignment was broadcasting the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, for WSMV4 and other Meredith Corporation-owned stations. Besides broadcasting, he is an internationally published novelist who has authored The Darkest Time of Night and The Dark Above.

Finley has won 4 IRE awards for contributing to WSMV4 investigations that exposed the corruption in former Judge Casey Moreland’s courts, exposing errors government agencies made during the flood that swamped downtown Nashville, a series of reports that led to the imprisonment of a sexual predator, and exposing imposter police officers in Middle Tennessee.
Finley won two national Edward R. Murrow awards, twenty-six Emmys, a national Headliner award, six regional Edward R. Murrow awards, and several first-place honors from the Associated Press. Additionally, he won the Best Public Service Award from the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters. He was also nominated as the journalist of the year by the AP and as the best large-market TV reporter in Tennessee. In 2024, he joined the University of Illinois’ Hall of Fame.
