Nelson has broadcasted many big weather stories at WJCL including Hurricane Helene and Tropical Storm Debby during an active 2024 hurricane season. Further, he broadcasted multiple tornado outbreaks, Tropical Storm Irma, Hurricane Matthew, and Hurricane Idalia.
Nelson won a Southeast Emmy Award for broadcasting Hurricane Idalia. The Georgia Association of Broadcasters granted him GABBY awards for Best Program for the WJCL Hurricane Special and Best Severe Weather Coverage.
