Prior to his joining the White House beat, he served as the national political correspondent during CNN’s ‘America’s Choice 2012’ election coverage. He also was the lead correspondent embedded with the Romney presidential campaign.
Covering the latest campaign developments, Acosta traveled alongside the GOP presidential candidate to Poland, Israel, and to the United Kingdom, and to the key battleground states. Acosta also covered the presidential debate, breaking several political stories, and also two one-on-one interviews with Mitt Romney. Acosta co-anchored CNN’s weekend political program, Ballot Bowl covering the campaigns of then-Sen. Hillary Clinton, then-Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain. He covered several news headlines for the network that included the Gulf Coast during the oil spill crisis and the Virginia Tech tragedy.
Prior to him joining CNN, Acosta worked at CBS News which originally was based in New York. There he served as a correspondent since February 2003. He later shifted to the CBS bureau that was located in Atlanta.
Acosta reported on several events that included the 2004 presidential campaign of then-Sen. John Kerry, Hurricane Katrina. He also covered the Iraq war from Baghdad and the 2003 Northeastern blackout in the United States. The U.S. blackout was of great impact on major cities in the United States.
Previously, Acosta served as a correspondent for the network Newspath, a 24-hour news service based in Dallas and Chicago from the year 2001-2003. He reported on the September 11 terrorist attacks, the sniper story in Washington, D.C., and the Pennsylvania miner rescue among others.
Prior to his tenure at the network, he worked both at WBBM-TV from 2000 to 2001 and KTVT-TV from 1998 to 2000 which were CBS-owned stations based in Chicago and Dallas. For the networks, he served both as a reporter and substitute anchor.
Additionally, Acosta worked in Knoxville, Tennessee at WBIR-TV from 1995 to 1998 serving both as a reporter and substitute anchor. Acosta began his journalistic career in Washington at WMAL-AM radio prior to moving to television.
