Atwater worked for WISN-TV in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as a news reporter/anchor before going to WTXF. He started his career in broadcasting at CBS’s WKYT-TV in Lexington, Kentucky where he worked as a news reporter/anchor.

During his time at WTXF, Atwater held roles as a weekend newscast anchor and general assignment reporter. His tenure in Philadelphia saw him reporting from the scene of significant stories that garnered widespread national attention, such as the emergency landing of a United States Airways flight in the Hudson River and the Amish school shooting in Lancaster County.

After Atwater moved to Boston, he continued to cover notable events such as the MBTA fire incident at Downtown Crossing, as well as the significant water main break in Weston during the spring of the year 2010. His reporting also extended to the race to succeed Ted Kennedy in the Senate seat.
