She began her career at CNN’s Baghdad bureau in Iraq between 2005-2011, serving as a producer and a reporter. Jomana covered major news events including the withdrawal of US forces from the country, and Iraq’s first democratic elections.
She was among the number of CNN correspondents on the ground in Iraq in 20144 and 2015 reporting on the battle to recapture cities from the terror group and the rise of ISIS. In 2011, Karadsheh was part of CNN’s award-winning teams, covering the “Arab Spring” across the region in Tunisia, Syria, Libya, and Egypt.
Jomana was among of foreign journalists held hostage at the Rixos Hotel, in Tripoli by loyalists to former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in August 2011. She was identified for her role in negotiating the release of the group.
Jomana returned to Tripoli later that year and was based there until 2014. when inter-militia fighting spread across the capital and destroyed the main airport. While in Libya, she reported stories including Libya’s first post-Gadhafi democratic elections.
Furthermore, Karadsheh was the only American TV journalist on the ground in Libya reporting live as the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi was unfolding in September. Additionally, in October 2013, US Special Forces grabbed former al-Qaeda operative Abu Anas al-Libi in a raid in Tripoli.
