Josh Dun is an American musician best known as the drummer of the musical duo Twenty One Pilots, alongside Tyler Joseph. Twenty One Pilots has won six nominations for a Grammy Award, of which he has won one. The band is best known for the songs “Stressed Out”, “Ride”, and “Heathens”, which achieved commercial success between 2015 and 2016.

Dun initially took trumpet lessons at school, later turning his attention to drums and teaching himself how to play. He imitated the beats of the records he’d buy on an electronic drum kit. He met former Twenty One Pilots drummer, Chris Salih, during his 3 year tenure at Guitar Center. Chris eventually introduced him to his future bandmate, Tyler Joseph.

Dun joined House of Heroes in March 2010 as a touring member after the band’s drummer, Colin Rigsby, went on a hiatus to spend more time with his family. Dun discovered an interest in punk music when he was 13 years old. He mostly listened o punk rock when he was growing up. He credits …And Out Come the Wolves by Rancid as an early influence due to its combination of different music genres.

Some of his earliest purchases include an album by NOFX and Human Clay by Creed. Next, he branched into pop punk music, crediting Does This Look Infected? by Sum 41, as well as Blink-182. While learning drums, he played along to Metallica.

Dun’s parents set strict rules on what music he could listen to, which made him hide albums like Green Day’s Dookie under his bed. If they found them, they’d get mad and make him find a Christian alternative, like Relient K to listen to. He later transitioned to slower alternative rock with albums like Daisy by Brand New.
