Josh Dun is an American musician best known as the drummer of the musical duo Twenty One Pilots, alongside Tyler Joseph. Twenty One Pilots has won six nominations for a Grammy Award, of which he has won one. The band is best known for the songs “Stressed Out”, “Ride”, and “Heathens”, which achieved commercial success between 2015 and 2016.

Josh Dun Career
Dun initially took trumpet lessons at school, later turning his attention to drums and teaching himself how to play. He imitated the beats of the records he’d buy on an electronic drum kit. He met former Twenty One Pilots drummer, Chris Salih, during his 3 year tenure at Guitar Center. Chris eventually introduced him to his future bandmate, Tyler Joseph.
Dun joined House of Heroes in March 2010 as a touring member after the band’s drummer, Colin Rigsby, went on a hiatus to spend more time with his family. He appears in the music video for the band’s single God Save the Foolish Kings. Further, he performed on the band’s live tour until October, when Rigsby returned to his duties.
After leaving his job at Guitar Center, Dun planned to move to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a drum career in the industry. However, Chris stopped him and offered him his role.
Dun played a show with Tyler Joseph after Salih and bassist Nick Thomas left the group due to other commitments. They played one song before the police officers showed up and cancelled the show. Next, he became the band’s full-time drummer and joined as production on the band’s second studio album, Regional at Best, drew to a close. On July 8, 2011, the album was released after he was recruited. Despite not performing on the album, he is credited in the liner notes.
2011 to present;
In April 2012, Twenty One Pilots signed with record label Fueled by Ramen. On January 8, 2013, they released their third studio album, Vessel, which reached No. 21 on the Billboard 200. They released Blurryface, their fourth studio album, on May 17, 2015. At this point, the band had topped the charts with their hit single “Stressed Out.” The song’s music video was filmed at Dun’s childhood home, and has since reached over 2.9 billion views on YouTube.
Twenty One Pilots released their fifth studio album, Trench, on October 5, 2018. Trench was the first release of the newly revived Elektra Music Group. On April 9, 2020, they released a new single, Level of Concern. The music video was filmed in both Joseph and Dun’s respective homes while they were under lockdown due to the U.S. state and local government responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Twenty One Pilots released a Christmas song, Christmas Saves the Year, on December 8, 2020, during Tyler Joseph’s Twitch livestream. Scaled and Icy, their sixth studio album, was released on May 21, 2021. The band’s seventh studio album, Clancy, was set to be released on May 17, 2024. However, the album as delayed for one week to May 24, as Dun, Joseph and videographer Mark Eshleman finished music videos for each song
During Dun’s directorial debut, he worked as the director of the music video for the album’s third single, “Backslide”, which was released on April 25, 2024. The duo announced plans for an eighth studio album, Breach, in September. They are scheduled to release a single on June 12th, which reportedly ends the Clancy storyline.

Dun partnered with Paramore’s Hayley Williams in 2017 to promote her hair dye line “Good Dye Young.”
Influences
Dun discovered an interest in punk music when he was 13 years old. He mostly listened o punk rock when he was growing up. He credits …And Out Come the Wolves by Rancid as an early influence due to its combination of different music genres.
Some of his earliest purchases include an album by NOFX and Human Clay by Creed. Next, he branched into pop punk music, crediting Does This Look Infected? by Sum 41, as well as Blink-182. While learning drums, he played along to Metallica.
Dun’s parents set strict rules on what music he could listen to, which made him hide albums like Green Day’s Dookie under his bed. If they found them, they’d get mad and make him find a Christian alternative, like Relient K to listen to. He later transitioned to slower alternative rock with albums like Daisy by Brand New.
