Hartnett studied at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic School and Minneapolis South High School. While in high school, he played football but left the team due to a knee injury when he was 16. Next, he tried out youth theater, acting in productions of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Guys and Dolls. His performances gained the attention of a talent scout.
