Berman Jackson’s career as a lawyer started right after finishing law school, where she worked closely with Judge Harrison Lee Winter at a special court called the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit from 1979 to 1980. Then, she was a lawyer for the government in the District of Columbia from 1980 to 1986. She got awards for her good work on important murder and sexual assault cases. After that, she was a lawyer at a place called Venable, Baetjer, Howard, and Civiletti from 1986 to 1994.
Starting in the year 2000 until she became a judge, Berman Jackson worked at a law firm called Trout Cacheris & Solomon PLLC in Washington, D.C. She was good at dealing with complicated cases, criminal investigations, and defending people in court. She also helped with trials and appeals. In the year 2009, Berman Jackson was a lawyer for William J. Jefferson, a person from Louisiana, during a trial about corruption. Jackson Jr. was sent to prison for half a year, and his wife was sent for a year.
On April 3, 2018, Jackson punished a person who used to work with Gates. This person was a lawyer named Alex van der Zwaan from the Netherlands, and he practiced law in London. Berman Jackson said he had to go to prison for a month and pay $20,000 as a fine. Van der Zwaan lied to investigators about something related to Russia and the U.S. election in 2016. After he left prison, he was sent back to his home in the Netherlands. In December 2020, Donald Trump forgave him and said he didn’t have to be punished anymore.
In a case called Chamber of Commerce v. National Labor Relations Board in 2012, Berman Jackson made a decision. She said the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) had the power to make a rule. This rule would make workplaces put up posters to tell workers about their rights to join together and talk about their work conditions. But she didn’t like some parts of the rule. The NLRB said that not putting up the poster would always be wrong and that you could complain about it anytime. She didn’t agree with these parts.
The following year, another group called the D.C. Circuit changed the NLRB’s rule. They said it wasn’t right because it went against a law called the National Labor Relations Act, which protects what most employers can say. In the year 2015, Berman Jackson said no to a group of businesses that didn’t like a rule from the NLRB. This rule made union elections happen faster.

Berman Jackson made the rules even stricter, saying Stone can’t talk about the case at all.

On February 20, 2020, before Stone’s punishment, Berman Jackson said Stone wasn’t in trouble for supporting Trump, but for hiding things. She sentenced Stone to 40 months in prison and a fine. Stone’s lawyers tried to remove Berman Jackson, but she said they didn’t have a good reason. Berman Jackson also didn’t like how Trump talked about the jury and the case. Trump later changed Stone’s punishment in July 2020 and then pardoned him in December 2020.
