During her time in college, Melvin quickly discovered her love for the social science behind how meteorologists share weather information, including why certain colors are preferred for specific weather events over others, and how that skews public perception. She really values inclusiveness in weather. Her color-blind father has played an instrumental role in leading this area of research.
Melvin launched her professional career in the Cape Girardeau-Paducah-Harrisburg market. She began working there just weeks after the destructive Mayfield tornado. The region covered 4 states, including a few northwestern Tennessee counties.
While in the Midwest, Melvin witnessed a wide variety of weather, including snowstorms and tornadoes. She started her stint as a weekend meteorologist and reporter, later climbing the ranks to weekday mornings.
Away from the studio, Melvin is often in a classroom. She maintains that part of her duties as a meteorologist include being a public servant and an educator. She has worked with students of all ages, from college to elementary.
