During the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Cate reported from Landstuhl, Germany, specifically from a military hospital where soldiers injured during the attacks were treated in 2005. Cate began his journalism career as a news anchor and reporter at WKPT-TV from 1984 to 1988.

Additionally, his DNA report played a crucial role in solving a decade-old murder mystery.
