He started his journalism career while still in college, where he served at the Wisconsin Public Radio network as a news anchor/reporter.
Over the years of his career, he has covered many stories. He has provided reports from various places, including the White House and the center of Hurricane Hugo. Rice covered the recount of votes in the Florida presidential election, including the examination of those controversial “hanging chads.” He was also present at Super Bowls XL in Detroit, Michigan, and XXX in Phoenix, Arizona. In the year 1994, when United States Air Flight 427 crashed near Pittsburgh, Rice’s reports were broadcast all across the United States by CBS and in Canada by the CBC. In the year 2000, he reported live on the “CBS Evening News” during a tense time following a shooting incident in Pittsburgh’s suburbs.

He has served as a creator and teacher of a television news reporting course at Point Park University. Rice has been a board member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Pennsylvania Chapter and is the Honorary Chair of Pittsburgh’s yearly MS Walk.
He has also been in charge of the advisory board of Pittsburgh Cares, a volunteer service group, and is an advisory board member of the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council. In the past, he was on the board of The American Red Cross’s Southwestern Pennsylvania chapter and has done charity work with numerous organizations such as the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. In the year 2007, the Food Bank recognized Rice’s contributions with the Hunger Awareness Day Award.
Rice says that he really loves it when he gets to be the emcee and tell stories at the annual Off the Record show in October at Pittsburgh’s Byham Theater. It’s a musical where local journalists and actors make fun of the city’s important people, and it all helps local charities.
