Mongillo is a breast cancer survivor. In March 2015, she found a small lump in her breast. The doctor said it might be a blocked milk duct. A few months later, during her yearly check-up, the lump couldn’t be found. Later, her fiancé, Adam, discovered the lump again. It was small (1.3 cm) and hard to locate. It didn’t show up on the mammogram. The lump was under her armpit, deep inside the breast tissue. She could only feel it when lying on her side with her arm raised.

Since her cancer was driven by estrogen and she was young, her doctors advised a double mastectomy. She agreed without hesitation. She had the surgery in March. The mastectomy and reconstruction were tough, and she needed emergency surgery at one point. Her final surgery was in October. She’s proud to say she’s now cancer-free.

Having experienced breast cancer firsthand, she’s now dedicated to raising awareness about the disease. She’s joined the board of Susan G. Komen and participated in the Race for the Cure. She’s also grateful to The Pink Ribbon Girls for providing meals and cleaning help during her recovery.

Through her journey, she’s learned to appreciate life and cherish relationships. She urges everyone to listen to their bodies and seek medical attention if they find a lump. She encourages self-breast exams, emphasizing the importance of lying on your side with your arm raised.
