In October 2006, the nation’s initial IBC clinic opened in Houston, Texas, at MD Anderson. The clinic’s founder noted Esteban’s reporting helped pave the way for the clinic. In 2008, she won the prestigious Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for her report.
Esteban exposed how software could be used against an individual to listen in on phone conversations despite a cell phone being turned off. One of her Problem Solver Reports, “The Man with Half a Face,” earned her two Emmys. That report highlighted the story of James O’Neal, a man born with a genetic disorder that left half his face covered in tumors. Even though he was disfigured, he never hid his face and inspired so many, including the Seattle Seahawks.
Esteban’s reports on the dangers of a toy (magnetic building sets) prompted the Consumer Product Safety Commission to withdraw 3.4 million Magnetix building sets. Her report revealed that the small magnets inside the building pieces could easily fall out and could be swallowed or aspirated by children. She began her investigation when she first covered a Redmond toddler who passed away after he swallowed magnets, which twisted and blocked his small intestine.
Esteban won the Glenn Galbreath Award for “outstanding reporting on disabled veterans” matters.
