On October 6, 2006, he successfully persuaded the controversial Westboro Baptist Church, based in Topeka, Kansas, to appear on his show in exchange for refraining from picketing the funeral of victims from the West Nickel Mines School shooting near Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania. Initially offering financial compensation to stop picketing. Gallagher later granted the church one hour of airtime after criticism labeled his initial offer as unethical. The Amish funerals proceeded peacefully under the terms of the contract, which imposed a $500,000 penalty for any presence of picketers near the funerals.

In response to Westboro Baptist Church’s plans to protest the funerals of victims of the Virginia Tech massacre, Gallagher extended an offer of three hours of airtime in return for an agreement not to protest. On April 24, 2007, the WBC participated as in-studio guests throughout Gallagher’s entire program. Similarly, Gallagher reached an agreement with Westboro regarding potential protests at the funerals of those killed in Tucson, Arizona on January 8, 2011. This was despite the passage of emergency legislation on January 12, 2011, rendering such protests illegal in Arizona.

Take the whole bunch of them and put them in a detention camp until this war is over because they’re a bunch of traitors.”.
