Teller starred in The Spectacular Now and 21 & Over alongside Shailene Woodley. Miles took the role of a drummer who tries to please his abusive jazz teacher in the 2014 Whiplash. This role led to his nomination for the BAFTA Rising Star Award, the Satellite Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture, and the Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Actor.
Teller earned more recognition for portraying Peter Hayes in Divergent in 2014 and the film Continuation in 2015 Insurgent and 2016 Allegiant. In 2015, he portrayed Mister Fantastic in the Fantastic Four. In 2016, he took the role of David Packouz, an arms dealer in War Dogs. Miles had to train for five months to take a role in the 2016 Bleed for This as Vinny Paz, the biopic boxer. Teller starred in Thank You for Your Service and Only the Brave biopic films in 2017. It was publicized that he would star in The Fence, a political satire in November 2020.
