Powell received the 2003 “Best Weather Cast” honor for the state of Nebraska from the Associated Press. Since joining FOX 11, he has received the “Best Weather Coverage” Award from the Northwest Broadcast News Association in 2005 and “Best Weathercast” Award from the Wisconsin Associated Press in 2007.
Powell specializes in mesoscale meteorology (severe weather) and chased tornadoes from 1992 to 2004. He spent three of those years as a subcontractor for an engineering firm and the Department of Commerce. In this role, he chased tornadoes and positioned instruments before tornadic thunderstorms.
Powell evaluates that he has witnessed at least twenty tornadoes over the years, including four tornadoes in two hours in 1999. Moreover, he pursued a storm that produced the biggest hail on record in the United States.
Powell serves as a full member of the American Meteorological Society and is on the committee that reviews the test for the AMS’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Seal of Approval. He previously sat on AMS’s Board of Broadcast Meteorology. In 2006, he upgraded his old AMS Seal of Approval to the new Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Seal of Approval.
