Besides being a baseball broadcaster, Gammons has also pursued a career in music. Gammons released his 1st album, “Never Slow Down, Never Grow Old,” on July 4, 2006. In this album, he sang and played guitar, covering songs like Warren Zevon’s “Model Citizen” and The Clash’s “Death or Glory” alongside his own songs. The money from the album went to Epstein’s charity. In December 2000, Gammons, along with sportswriters Casey Riddles, Jeff Horrigan, Debbi Wrobleski, Kay Hanley (singer), and Mindy d’Arbeloff, started the Hot Stove Cool Music benefit concert series. This fundraiser now happens twice a year, once in January and again in August and July. Gammons is closely connected to the Boston rock scene, and he even officiated the marriage of Jennifer D’Angora (singer) and Ed Valauskas (bassist) in November 2007.
Gammons likes blues and indie rock. He joins the Boston indie rock scene when he can, even attending Midnight Oil shows and mentioning the band in his columns. He’s also a fan of Pearl Jam and talks about their concerts and albums on ESPN Radio. With the help of Boston musicians and Theo Epstein, the former Red Sox General Manager, Gammons plays guitar and sings at the yearly Hot Stove, Cool Music concert. Peter Gammons Illness / Health / Stroke
Gammons had a brain aneurysm near his home in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on June 27, 2006. He was taken to Falmouth Hospital and then airlifted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. There, Dr. Arthur Day, a friend of Ted Williams (the late Red Sox hitter), performed his operation. Bob Ryan, a sportswriter for The Boston Globe, said Gammons would be in intensive care (ICU) for ten to twelve days.
After the surgery, he rested in intensive care and was listed in “good” condition the next day. On July 17, he left the hospital and went to the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Cape and Islands. On August 19 of that year, he made his 1st public appearance since the illness strike at Fenway Park during a Yankees game vs. Red Sox.
