His grandfather is John Jacob Weigel, founder of Weigel Broadcasting and former Lawrence Welk radio announcer.

Earlier, Weigel worked for KOVR TV Sacramento as a Lead General Assignment Reporter from January 2005 to February 2008. While there, he covered the top stories of the region including Lake Tahoe Fires, Snowstorms in the Sierras, and State Capitol. Weigel previously served as a reporter, writer and copy editor at Los Angeles Times from August 2002 to January 2006. At Los Angeles Times, he was responsible for editing content making sure all copy was consistent with AP Style and free of all errors on deadline.
Before joining Los Angeles Times, Weigel worked for Chicago Sun-Times as a High School Sports reporter from August 2001 to August 2002. During his time there, Weigel hosted “Celebrity Rock” Weekly Talk Show and co-Hosted “The Spike Manton Show” Daily Talk Show.
Rafer gained recognition while reporting from the St. Louis anchor desk amid the demonstrations in Ferguson, Missouri. He also gained widespread attention nationally for being the journalist who first reported that Chicago police intended to charge Jussie Smollett with staging a fake hate crime.
Rafer Weigel Acting Career
Weigel’s debut in acting started at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre, where he portrayed the title character in “Master Harold”…and the Boys, and collaborated with other theater groups including The Wisdom Bridge, Bailiwick, and Organic Theatres. His television debut was a minor role on the locally produced TV series, The Untouchables. In 1993, he was recruited for a news magazine program featuring young journalists and relocated to Hollywood. Shortly after, he secured an on-camera hosting position for VH1, where he teamed up with future Headline News colleague A.J. Hammer.
Weigel returned to Hollywood by 1995, where he secured minor speaking parts on ER and Party of Five, and making guest appearances on JAG, Charmed, and the former Vengeance Unlimited. In 1997, he became a regular cast member on the NBC sitcom Jenny, starring Jenny McCarthy, though the series was short-lived, lasting only one season. During the same year, he also portrayed the Dark Jedi Yun in the video game Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. Shortly thereafter, he transitioned into film, starring opposite William Shatner and Eric McCormack in the cult classic Free Enterprise, and appearing alongside Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen in the Showtime film Rated X.
