When Thompson was12 years old, he had the privilege to meet Jim Thornhill, the Civil Defense director for Marion County and Columbia, now known as Emergency Management. Mr. Thornhill, a former Air Force meteorologist, took Thompson under his wing, becoming his mentor and initiating him into the world of meteorology.

Thompson’s debut in broadcasting came at WFFF radio in Columbia, where, at the age of 13, he presented a weather segment. In 1982, he secured his first television job as the weekend weathercaster for WAPT channel 16. Throughout the years, Thompson has undertaken various roles in the Pine Belt’s television stations, including weekend weathercasting for WTVC in Chattanooga, TN.
