Cain started his broadcasting career working in radio in the year 1985 at KRES/KWIX in Moberly, Missouri. It was the 1st radio station in the country to have commercial Doppler weather radar. Then, 2 years later (in 1987), he moved to Quincy, IL to manage 99Q, a well-liked Top 40 music station at that time.

During his time at WGEM, Cain won many awards. These include a Midwest Emmy Award, the Illinois & Missouri Broadcasters Association’s Best Weathercast Award, and the Edward R. Murrow Award for his report on the 1993 Flood. For his narration in “Past The Boundary, The Story of Augustine Tolton, America’s First Black Catholic Priest”, he was recognized with the Dove Award.
