He also ventured to the Great Plains for storm chasing during his college years. Before Mobile, he served as the morning meteorologist in Montgomery, Alabama, at the Alabama News Network (CBS 8/ABC 32) for eight years, covering various severe weather events, tropical systems, and occasional winter weather occurrences. Ryan is a native of Alabama and grew up near Birmingham.

He won the tournament championship for the top forecaster of the 2010-2011 school year, surpassing competitors from renowned institutions such as the University of Georgia, MIT, and Penn State. Additionally, he actively chased storms during significant weather events, including the devastating tornado outbreak of April 27, 2011.
