Wichman was completely terrified of storms while he was a kid. He always dived for cover when he heard thunderstorms. Eventually, his fear morphed into a fascination, making him realize the dream of being a ‘weatherman’ when was just in grade school. He discovered his hobby of storm chasing while he was in college.
Wichman has gone to Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas in pursuit of the worst weather he could find. So far, the biggest chase he has been on was near Wakita in May 2010 when he safely got within a half-mile of an EF-3 tornado. He does not solely chase tornadoes, but travels to ‘Tornado Alley’ every year to witness the sheer strength and beauty of storms. His experience makes him a dependable meteorologist when severe weather threatens the region.
