Also, he won the “Bell” Outstanding Media Coverage Award from the Texas Retired Teachers’ Association for covering education issues.

Nichols retired after 33 years of coaching Women’s Basketball in 2007. He spent the last 12 years as the head coach of Women’s Basketball at McMurry University. He served as an inductee of the prestigious McMurry University Athletic Hall of Honor in 2017. Further, he served as a a Paul Harris Fellow in 2013.

Nichols serves as the founder and president of Basketball Smiles, a program of free basketball camps in the inner city neighborhoods of the Bahamas. In 2018, he was a competitor on Dancing With the Abilene Stars and voted winner of the Best Costume Award.

Nichols performed with the Abilene Opera Association in their production of West Side Story in 2019. In August of that same year, he received the Kiwanis Community Caring Award from the Kiwanis Club of Greater Abilene for his Basketball Smiles work. The Abilene Opera Association selected him as the 2019 Volunteer Honoree of the Year Award from the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council Hearts for the Arts.
