Early Career

When she was 18, Canning professionally debuted as an actress in George Orwell’s 1984 at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton. After finding an agent, she launched her TV and film acting career in Vancouver. She took time off from her work at a restaurant while filming. Her first role came in 2008 when she starred as Nicky Hilton in Paparazzi Princess: The Paris Hilton Story.

In 2009, Canning made a guest appearance on Smallville and Kyle XY. Additionally, she played the role of Anne Sluti in Taken in Broad Daylight. That same year, she filmed the pilot episode of the CW’s The Vampire Diaries. She also portrayed Maggie McGregor in Black Field. Canning starred in Space Channel’s Primeval: New World as Dylan Weir, a predator control expert. In 2012, she starred opposite Aaron Ashmore in I Put a Hit on You. The following year, she joined the cast of Eadweard where she portrayed Flora, the wife of 19th-century photographer Eadweard Muybridge.

Canning portrayed general surgeon Mel Conner in Global’s Remedy opposite Sarah Allen, Dillon Casey, and Enrico Colantoni. For her performance in the role, she won the UBCP/ACTRA Best Actor Award in 2014. The following year, she starred the Leo Best Lead Performance Award. 

In 2017, Canning co-starred in War for the Planet of the Apes. Next, she starred in On the Farm and Hello Destroyer.
