Ashmore has had various notable roles in his acting career. One of the most recognized roles was portraying Bobby Drake / Iceman in the X-Men film series, including X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand. He reprised the role of Iceman in the animated series The Super Hero Squad Show and voiced the character for X-Men: The Official Game.

In addition to his superhero role, Ashmore starred as Cadet Major Brad Rigby in the Disney Channel original film Cadet Kelly (2002) and guest-starred as Eric Summers in Smallville. He had leading roles in TV series such as Animorphs (Jake) and Heartbeat (Tyler Connell). Ashmore took on the lead role in the SciFi Channel miniseries Legend of Earthsea (2004), based on Ursula K.
