Sloane Heffernan Career

Heffernan serves at WRAL-TV as a Weekend News Anchor and news reporter. At Wral, she has covered the Carthage nursing home tragedy, and for that, she won an Emmy Award. She says that her news philosophy is straightforward: to cover each story in a direct, succinct, and truthful manner, using sound and images to create memorable moments for viewers.

She also says that her favorite interviews at WRAL are with people who have overcome challenges and achieved success. When coming to her education, she is a proud graduate of Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, which awarded her a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism in 1996.

A war hero who lost almost everything in a hurricane in southwest Florida was one of her most memorable interviews. Heffernan says that the hero was discovered ten months after the hurricane, living in a storm-damaged home without power. He and his wife were victims who were forgotten. Local, state, and federal agencies offered them very little assistance.

He was also dying of cancer, which made matters worse. Despite the odds stacked against him, he maintained a positive attitude and was thankful for what he had. His only concern was dying before seeking a safe place for his beloved wife to live. He got a call from FEMA the day after our story aired. They were transferred into a temporary apartment and received much-needed assistance within a month. This is the kind of story that really inspires Heffernan.
